Iconic little blue pixies, The Smurfs made their first appearance in the Johan & Pirlouit album “The Smurfs and the Magic Flute”, created by Peyo in 1958. Since then, those blue characters, dressed with white pants and hats have been living many adventures in multiple albums. In 2020, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to comics and to Peyo’s work but also to the hundred of iconic characters, all very much alike, but with such different nature. Grouchy Smurf is, by nature, against everthing that one says or proposes. It is easy to think he doesn’t like anything or anybody, but has, at the bottom, a good heart.
The Smurfs (French: Les Schtroumpfs; Dutch: De Smurfen) is a Belgian comic franchise centered on a fictional colony of small, blue, human-like creatures who live in mushroom-shaped houses in the forest. The Smurfs was first created and introduced as a series of comic characters by the Belgian comics artist Peyo (the pen name of Pierre Culliford) in 1958, wherein they were known as Les Schtroumpfs. The word “smurf” is the original Dutch translation of the French “schtroumpf”, which, according to Peyo, is a word he invented during a meal with fellow cartoonist André Franquin when he could not remember the word salt.
